Mary Macken

About

Mary Macken is Executive Corporate Counsel at Blacktown City Council and served as President of the Law Society of New South Wales in 2010. With extensive experience as both a small and large firm solicitor, she has brought a breadth of perspective to the profession throughout her career.

As President, Mary pursued the implementation of the national profession and worked actively to advance the interests of women, people with disabilities, and diversity within the legal profession. She has also chaired the Property, Planning, Government and Costs Committees, and fought for the retention of reserved positions on Council to ensure greater representation for rural and government solicitors.

Mary believes strongly in inclusivity for rural, government, and corporate solicitors and is committed to empowering these practitioners. She has been recognised internationally, receiving the Legion of Honour from France for her efforts in promoting collaboration between French and Australian lawyers.

Priorities

  • Promoting inclusivity for rural, government, and corporate solicitors to ensure their voices are heard on Council.
  • Preserving areas of practice while reducing regulatory burdens and facilitating professional opportunities.
  • Advancing representation by supporting the appointment of solicitors to judicial and quasi-judicial positions.

"I am committed to a Council that is inclusive, forward-looking, and supportive of all solicitors, wherever and however they practise.

To ensure the Law Society has diverse and expert leadership, I am seeking re-election to Council with 5 other lawyers that I encourage you to support."
